Prepping for A Freeze

Preparing for a freeze

Backflow Device Ilustration
Backflow Device Ilustration

INSULATING YOUR UNIT FOR TEMPORARY FREEZING

1. Your backflow device is located above ground on the side of your house.

2. Cover the round bell on top and both handles with a few towels, an old sleeping bag, or something substantial.

3. Insulate the exposed pipes.

TO FULLY PREPARE YOUR SPRINKLER FOR A HARD FREEZE

(although the substantial covering or wrapping as indicated above is likely all you need to do)

1. Your backflow device is located above ground on the side of your house.

2. Turn the lowest handle (not the one on top) of the unit 90 degrees so that the handle is perpendicular to the pipe that goes up and down. This will stop the water from entering the backflow device.

3. Turn your system on manually from the controller (any station will be fine). It may run for just a bit, then turn off. To turn the water on manually with a Hunter controller: Turn the knob left to manual-all stations, then turn it back right to run or run bypass sensor.

4. Unscrew the small screws on the side of the unit with a screwdriver. A little water may come out. There is no need to turn the top handle.

5. Insulate the exposed pipes and cover the bell on top of the unit.

ALL UNDERGROUND PIPING SHOULD BE FINE. IT IS NOT CUSTOMARY

TO BLOW OUT LINES IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA.
